Hampton Falls 4-3 in a Close Match to Saint Peter’s

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Aug. 25, 2024) … The Lady Pirates fell in a close match to Saint Peter's 4-3. Early on Hampton trailed the Peacocks 2-0 but scored a goal in the final minute of the first half. The Lady Pirates led Saint Peter's 3-2 with two goals in the second half. The Peacocks scored twice in the final five minutes escaping the match with a win.

During the beginning of the match, both sides jockeyed for control of the contest. Through the first 15 minutes, the Lady Pirates were outshot 4-1 but were equal on shots on goal 1-1. Hampton's back line was able to absorb the pressure from Peacocks. Mattie Eddozie created Hampton's first shot of the match. SPU's Goalkeeper made the save halting HU's early attack.

Right before the hydration break in the first half, Saint Peter's jumped out to a one-goal lead. The Peacocks continued to produce shots throughout the half. SPU doubled its advantage finding the back of the net once more in the 35th minute.

Coach Scot Vorwold's side continued to battle in the closing minutes. After winning the ball back from the Peacocks, the Lady Pirates created a strong opportunity with Madisyn Strange. Strange created a one-on-one with the keeper. Saint Peter's made the initial save but could not block Sanaa Perry's shot. Perry's goal in the final minute of the half was her first of the season and the third of her career. Before heading into halftime, Zaria Ascue picked up a yellow card.

With the momentum gained from Perry's goal, the Lady Pirates made it 2-2 in the 57th minute. Makayla Wade's strike was from outside the box and was her first goal of the 2024 campaign. Hampton's offense continued to create chances throughout the final 45 minutes. In the second half, the Lady Pirates produced 10 shots with five on goal.

Coach Vorwold's side took the lead 3-2 with a goal from Sofia Jimenez. Saint Peter's offense found its rhythm in the waning moments of the match. The Peacocks scored the equalizer with less than three minutes remaining. SPU found the back of the net once more with only 51 seconds left on the clock. Before time expired Hampton fired off one more shot. While it was on goal, Saint Peter's goalkeeper made the save.

The Lady Pirates return to action next Sunday, Sept. 1 at Alcorn State. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
