Lady Pirates Score Seven Goals in Victory Over Virginia State

ETTRICK, VA. (Sept. 16, 2024) … Hampton University women's soccer end the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 7-1 win over Virginia State. For the first time since the 2017 season, the Lady Pirates have won back-to-back matches. Coach Scot Vorwold's six different student-athletes found the back of the net. Cristina Boluda Piqueras, Mattie Edozie, and Patricia Wharton all scored their first goals of the season.

Hampton from the jump tested the Virginia State's defense. The Lady Pirates did not record a shot until the 13th minute but was called offside twice. Jennings used her speed throughout the match to break away from the Trojans' backline. Ellen Van Caenegm found the Bowie, Md. native, in front of the goal to make it 1-0.

Cristina Boluda Piqueras gave HU a two-goal advantage in the 27th minute. Boluda Piqueras struck from 35 yards out. Before the end of the half, the Lady Pirates put two more goals up on the board with Sanaa Perry and Mattie Edozie scoring. On Edozie's strike, Taylor Lewis-Richardosn produced her first career assists. The Washington, D.C. native, found Edozie in the penalty box.  Coach Vorwold's Lady Pirates also kept the Trojans off the board in the first 45 minutes. Virginia State could not rattle off a shot due to Hampton dominating possession.

Coming out of the half, Hampton's offense continued to fire at all cylinders. Sanaa Perry in the 51st minute scored her second goal of the contest. The Lady Pirates would quick to score again with Van Caenegem finding the back of the net. While the Trojans recorded three shots in the second half, VSU got on the board with a goal by Laryn Srurgis.

Hampton throughout the remainder of the match rattled off shots testing Virginia State's goalkeeper. The Lady Pirates finished the contest with 19 more shots than the Trojans. In the waning moments of the match, Patricia Wharton scored her first goal of the season.

Coach Vorwold's side begins Coastal Athletic Association play this Thursday, Sept. 19, at Powhatan Field against William & Mary. The match is set to begin at noon and will be streamed on FloSports.
