NORFOLK, Va. (Sept. 19, 2024) …  The Hampton University women's soccer team suffered its first home loss of the season with a 3-0 falter to William & Mary at Powhatan Field. The Lady Pirates were outshot 23-1 by the Tribe.

Hampton (3-5-1) fell behind early when William & Mary found the back of the net in the 12th minute. The Tribe were able to put pressure on HU's backline early and often producing 11 shots in the first half. While the Lady Pirates allowed an early goal, the defense started to hold William & Mary in check.

Coach Scot Vorwold's side did not give up another goal during the remainder of the half. Freshman Kaitlyn Howell made her seventh start in goal. In the first 45 minutes, Howell tallied three saves. The Pellham, N.Y. native, finished the match with six saves. While Hampton did not record a shot in the first half, the Lady Pirates were only down one goal.

Hampton's offense in the second half created their first opportunity of the match. Ellen Van Caenegem was able to manufacture space on the left wing. Caenegem's shot missed the top crossbar. Throughout the final 45 minutes, Hampton moved the ball into the attacking half.

William & Mary doubled its advantage in the 63rd minute with a goal by Mia Suchora. The Lady Pirates had a strong chance to make it a one-goal game. The Tribe's goalkeeper would halt the attack by stopping the through ball to HU's Madisyn Strange. Strange would receive a yellow card in the 69th minute. During the waning moments of the match, the Tribe scored another goal.
