Hampton Falls to Elon Inside the Schar Center 70-62

ELON, N.C. (Jan. 4, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team fell on the road to Elon 70-62. The Pirates would shoot 23 more shots than the Phoenix but HU shot 36.2 percent from the field. Elon did outrebound Hampton 40-33 but the Pirates finished the contest with 16 offensive rebounds.

Noah Farrakhan got the Pirates going early scoring the team's first points of the contest. Early on in the game, Elon had the lead 7-5. The Phoenix took advantage of early turnovers made by the Pirates. However, Hampton gained the advantage after Wayne Bristol Jr. made a three. Throughout the half, the Pirates would hold onto its lead.

While Hampton had the advantage, Elon was able to keep the contest within a couple of possessions. With both George Beal Jr. and Daniel Johnson scoring inside the paint Coach Ivan Thomas's side was up by seven 19-12. Before the under-eight media timeout, the Phoenix brought it back to within a possession once more. Farrakhan once again connected from beyond the arc. With Johnson's dunk in transition, the Pirates once more had a seven-point lead.e

In the final minute of the half Xzaiver Long hit a three to make it 32-28. Long finished the contest with nine points. Before the buzzer expired Elon's Matthew Van Komen produced a dunk. Heading into the half the Pirates were up 32-30.

Coming out of the first frame, both sides could not take control of the contest. Farrahan was able to provide a spark on the offensive end for the Pirates. The graduate senior finished the game with 14 points. Farrakhan's minutes in the second half would be limited due to foul trouble. 

Elon at the 15:35 mark started to take control of the contest. While the Phoenix largest run was only 6-0, Elon built a double-digit lead. Hampton after the final media timeout was able to make it a six-point game. Johnson continued to hit shots for the Pirates down the stretch. The freshman finished with a team-high 15 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the field. 

Hampton returns to action on Thursday hosting the Campbell Camels inside the Convocation Center. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. and the contest will be on Monumental Sports Network.
