Pirates Split Day One of the HBCU Collegiate Invitational

COVINGTON, Ga. (Feb. 14, 2025) … Hampton University softball split its first day of games at the HBCU Invitational. The Pirates opened the tournament against Jackson State 3-2. The Tigers were able to hold onto a two-run lead. HU scored in the sixth making it a one-run contest. The Pirates defeated Alcorn State 1-0. Hampton jumped out to a one-run lead in the first inning. While the Braves had five hits, HU's defense kept Alcorn State off the board. 

GAME ONE

Jackson State scored in the first frame. A hit by pitch gave the Tigers an early baserunner. With a stolen base and a passed ball, the runner reached third. The run scored for Jackson State on a groundout to second base. Hampton responded in the bottom half of the inning. Carmynn Bonner gave the Pirates their first baserunner by reaching first on an infield single. With no outs, HU took advantage of the basses being loaded. Cassidy Lee put the ball and reached first on the fielder's choice and scored Bonner making it 1-1.

Through the next three innings, Jada Evans held the Jackson State bats to only one hit. In the top of the fifth, the Tigers took the lead. Hampton recorded an early out but Jackson State had runners on second and third. A groundout scored the Tiger's first run of the frame. An infield single brought in another run giving Jackson State a 3-1 advantage. The Pirates got out of the stanza with a strikeout. Evans finished the day with five strikeouts and only issued two walks. 

Hampton started to cut into the Tiger's lead in the bottom of the sixth. Santrea Armstead brought in a run on a single to left field with two outs. Hampton escaped the half of the next inning unscathed and had one more chance to take the advantage. Before Jackson State recorded an out, the Pirates had runners on first and second. On a fly-out to right field, Leah Maduro advanced to third. The Tigers defense produced the third out of the frame to get out of the jam. 

GAME TWO

Hampton got on the board first against Alcorn State in the top of the first inning. Bonner was able to use her speed to score from first base on Kylie Hill's base hit to the outfield. The Braves Ta'Niyah Fletcher halted Hampton's producing in the frame with back-to-back strikeouts. The Pirate's defense started off strong with Hill making consecutive plays to record two outs Alcorn State tried to bring in the tying run on a base hit to the outfield. With Kylee Quinn's throw from centerfield, Hampton stopped the run from scoring. 

Angelina Branch got the start for the Pirates. Branch in six innings of work recorded four strikeouts. The Chesterfield, Va. native, only gave up five hits. 

At the bottom of the third, the Braves had another chance to produce the tying run. Alcorn State began the frame with a single in the infield. Before HU recorded an out the Braves had baserunners on first and second. The Pirates were able to get out of the stanza with back-to-back outs. 

Coach Cat Tarvin's side had opportunities to score in the fourth and seventh innings. Both Cassidy Lee and Armstead recorded base hits with only one out. With consecutive pop-ups, HU left the runners stranded. During the final frame, Leah Maduro produced a double to center field. The Braves with two outs ended the inning with a strikeout. 

Maduro had entered the contest to pinch-hit for Branch. The Miami, Fla. native stayed in the game for Hampton. Maduro did not allow a single batter to reach first in the seventh frame securing the 1-0 win for the Pirates.
