Pirates Win Fifth Straight with Resounding 81-49 Win Over Stony Brook

Hampton, Va. (Feb. 24, 2025) … High-flying Hampton (16-13, 8-8) posted its fifth win in a row and sixth in seven games with a convincing 81-49 triumph over Stony Brook (6-23, 2-14) at the Hampton Convocation Center.

After spotting the Seahawks the game's first three points, Hampton took control, led by 14 at the half, and cruised to a 32-point victory, Hampton's largest-ever margin of winning in CAA play. All 12 players who saw action for the Pirates scored. Wayne Bristol Jr. led the way registering a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Daniel Johnson added 13 points and George Beale Jr. finished with 12.

"Our team is built on defense, and we defended at a high level today," Coach Ivan Thomas said. "We were able to turn good defense into good offense. Give credit to our players. They prepared for this game and played hard on both ends of the court. They played with enthusiasm and toughness."

Stony Brook scored the first three points of the game on a basket and free throw by CJ Luster. But the next five minutes belonged to the Pirates. Hampton reeled off 15 straight points highlighted by Wayne Bristol Jr.'s three-pointer to take a 15-3 lead with 13:55 to go in the first half.

But the Seawolves regrouped from their slow start by outscoring Hampton 17-12 over the next 10 minutes to close the gap to 27-20 on a three-pointer by Jared Frey. In a game of streaks, the Pirates scored 12 of the final 17 points of the half to take a 39-25 to the locker room.

Johnson led the way for the Pirates with 13 points in the first stanza. Luster had 10 points for the Seawolves. The ball-hawking Pirates forced 11 Stony Brook turnovers with nine steals turning them into 16 points. Stony Brook shot 38.1 percent from the field in the opening half while the Pirates clicked on 42.9 percent of their shots. Eight of Hampton's 15 first half field goals were inside the paint.

Stony Brook scored the first points of the second half, but the Hampton onslaught continued. The Pirates led 44-27 at the 18:13 mark on a trey by George Beale Jr. Later, a 9-0 Hampton run boosted the lead to 55-31, highlighted by a three-pointer and a steal and slam by Bristol Jr. with 12:09 left.

The lead grew to 28, 67-39, after three-pointers by an Etienne Strothers and Bristol Jr. midway through the second half.  A three-pointer by Trevor Smith put the Pirates ahead by 29, 74-45. The lead was 31 after a Hampton steal and lay up by Smith. A trey by Daniel Banister Jr. made it 81-47 just under 2:00 to go.

Hampton's defensive prowess led to 18 Stony Brook turnovers which the Pirates turned into 28 points. The Pirates had 15 second-chance baskets while the Seawolves had none. As usual, Hampton's bench played a huge role. Forty-one of Hampton's 81 points came off the bench. The Pirates outrebounded Stony Brook 38-26.

The game with Stony Brook was originally slated for last week. The game was rescheduled for Monday at noon when a snowstorm blanketed Hampton Roads late last week. It marked the final home game of the 2024-25 campaign for the Pirates. Hampton closes out the regular season with games at Drexel on Feb. 27 and at Towson on March 1.
