Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pirates Fall on the Road to Drexel 53-52

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Feb. 27, 2025) … Hampton University men's basketball team fell to Drexel 53-52 in a defensive battle. The Pirates held the Dragons to only one made three. While Drexel had the advantage in paint scoring, Hampton dominated the offensive glass with 13 offensive rebounds. The Dragons scored six of the contest's final eight points to secure the victory.

Drexel jumped out to an early advantage going 6-for-7 from the field. Noah Farrakhan provided a spark to Hampton's offense in the opening moments of the game. Farrakhan scored the Pirate's first six points. Heading into the first media timeout, Hampton trailed Drexel 12-8.

While Hampton only committed six fouls in the first 20 minutes, Farrakhan picked up two fouls before the next media timeout. With HU's offense drawing fouls, Drexel would also be in foul trouble early. Wayne Bristol Jr and George Beale Jr. started to make shots for the Pirates. Throughout the first half, Coach Ivan Thomas's defense kept Hampton within striking distance. The Pirates held the Dragons to 0-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc.

Drexel jumped out to a double-digit advantage with less than six minutes to go in the first half. Hampton closed out the first frame on a 9-2 run. Etienne Strothers made a halfcourt shot as time expired cutting the Dragons lead to three points 30-27.

Coming out of the half, Hampton's defense provided high-quality looks. The Pirates for four points in the final 20 minutes came off of turnovers. Both sides continued to play staunch defense with only six points scored before the under-16 media timeout.

At the 13:46 mark, Farrakhan made a stepback jumper outside of the paint to give Hampton its first lead of the night 33-32. The jumper propelled HU to take a six-point advantage. The Newark, N.J. native, produced 12 points in the second half. Farrakhan finished the contest with a game-high 18 points.

While Drexel continuously brought the contest within one point, the Pirates remained in control of the game. However, in the final minute, Hampton's offense went quiet. A pair of free throws by the Dragons cut the Pirate's lead down to one point once again. Drexel got to the free-throw line once more with less than 30 seconds remaining. With the Dragons converting both free throws Drexel regained the lead 53-52.

A late turnover by Hampton gave the Dragons possession with seconds left on the clock. The Pirates fouled Drexel after the turnover. The Dragons missed the one-and-one free throw giving Hampton one more chance. The Pirates got a shot off from before time expired but missed.
