Pirates Fall to the Monmouth Hawks 68-63 Inside OceanFirst Bank Center

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (Feb. 6, 2025) … Hampton Universtiy men's basketball team fell inside the OceanFirst Bank Center 68-63. While Hampton was out-rebounded in the first frame, the Pirates won rebounding battle 36-35. HU in the second half cut Monmouth's advantage down to four by hitting shots down the stretch. The Pirates would comit turnovers in the final minute. 

While Hampton won the opening tip, Monmouth got on the board first with a putback tip-in layup. The Hawks jumped out to an early 6-2 lead having success on the offensive glass. The Pirates were able to limit Monmouth's early shot attempts by blocking shots. With both sides making shots, Monmouth held onto a one-possession advantage heading into the under-16 media timeout. 

Out of the timeout the Hawks took a six-point lead 18-12. Monmouth's Abdi Bashir Jr. got going early scoring 10 points. However, Bashir Jr. was quiet for the rest of the first frame. The Pirates were able to tie the game with Daniel Johnson hitting a pullup jumper. With George Beale Jr. hitting his first shot of the night, Hampton took its first lead 20-18. 

Throughout the half, the Pirates were able to get offensive production from multiple sources. While Coach Ivan Thaoms's side did not have a single scorer in double-figures, Kyrese Mullen, Trevor Smith, Beale Jr., and Johnson all had five or more points at the end of the first frame. Mullen was also active on the glass for Hampton with seven rebounds. 

Coming out of the final media timeout, it was still a one-possession contest in favor of Monmouth 35-32. The Hawks rallied off five consecutive points to take their largest lead of the half, 40-32. Johnson scored his sixth point of the game before the shot clock expired. With Madison Durr making a layup before time expired, Monmouth entered the half up by eight. 

Coming out of the frame the Hawks jumped out to their larges lead of the of the night  57-45. Monmouth throughout the remainder of the half could not build upon its advantage. Before the under four media timeout the Pirates went on a 7-0 run. Hampton had success shooting from beyond the arc and earned second chance points on the offensisive glass. 

While Monmouth made it a seven point game with 1:21 remaining, Noah Farrakhan answered with a three to bring in it back to four. In the final minute the Pirates committed two turnovers. While the Hawks had an empty possession after the first turnover, Monmouth hit a free throw putting the contest out of reach.

Hampton returns to action on Saturday against Northeastern. Tip-off at Matthews Arena is set for 4:00 p.m.
