Hampton Softball Defeats Elon 4-3 in Extra Innings

HAMPTON, Va. (March 15, 2025) … The Hampton University softball team secured its first Coastal Athletic Association win of the 2025 Season. The Pirates defeated the Phoenix 4-3 in eight innings. Coach Cat Tarvin's squad's victory is the program's first win over Elon. Hampton also outhit the Phoenix 9-6 in this afternoon's contest.

Elon jumped out to a 3-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the third. The Pirates quickly started to dig into Phoenix's lead in the bottom half of the stanza. HU began the frame with Meagan Ramos drawing a walk. A sacrifice bunt moved the baserunner to second. Kylie Hill brought in Ramos with a base knock to right field.

While Hampton had other opportunities to score, another would not come across until the bottom of the sixth inning. The Pirates leading hitter Carmynn Bonner began the frame with a double to left center field. Coach Tarvin's side laid down another sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third base. Freshman Cassidy Lee came up clutch for the Pirates. Lee with a single up the middle cut Elon's lead down to one. Hampton had baserunners on first and second but the Phoenix ended the frame with consecutive outs.

During the bottom of the seventh, the Pirates tied up the contest 3-3. Aitirhna Aiken showed discipline at the plate drawing a walk. The small ball approach paid off again for HU with another baserunner in scoring position. Bonner cleared the bases with two outs on a triple to right field. The Phoenix produced the final out of the stanza sending the contest to extra innings.

Elon did manufacture a baserunner in the top of the eighth. The Pirate's defense stood strong once again and did not allow a run. Once again Hampton's youth shinned in key moments. Riley Bohannon with her first collegiate hit provided HU's offense with a spark by tallying a base hit. The Pirates loaded the bases with Ramos and Leah Maduro recording base hits. Hampton took advantage of an error committed by the Phoenix to walk off the game in the bottom of the eighth.

Angelina Branch earned her fourth win of the season. The Sophomore pitched the full eight innings and recorded four strikeouts.
