Hampton Begins Stony Brook Series With 9-1 Loss

HAMPTON, Va. (March 28, 2025) … The Hampton University softball team resumed Coastal Athletic Association play against the Stony Brook Seawolves. Stony Brook held Hampton's bats quiet through the first four innings. While the Pirates got in a run in the fifth, the Seawolves offense continued to produce.

Stony Brook began the game with a double to left center. The leadoff hitter was able to score on the double steal attempt. While Hampton issued one more walk in the first inning, Coach Cat Tarvin's side got out of trouble with Angelina Branch after the early run gave the Pirates consecutive scoreless innings.

The Seawolves grew their advantage in the top of the fourth. Stony Brook recorded only two hits in the frame but took advantage of two errors committed by the Pirates. During the fifth stanza, two more runs came across the plate for SBU jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Once again errors would plague Hampton.

The Seawolves starting pitcher Crimson Rice started off the contest strong. While Crimson had two walks, HU only had one runner reach scoring position. Hampton's Amani Johnson broke the hit-less streak in the bottom of the fifth. With Carmynn Bonner's single to the outfield, HU had runners on first and third. Kylee Quinn drove in a run with a base knock through the left side. Stony Brook got out of the stanza on consecutive flyouts.

In the final two innings the Seawolves offense continued to produce driving in four more runs. Johnson tallied another hit for the Pirates in the bottom of the seventh. The freshman was the only Pirate to record multiple hits this afternoon. On Carmynn Bonner's infiled popup Stony Brook was able to turn it into a double play.
