Pirates Fall in Conference Contest to Stony Brook in Seven Innings

HAMPTON, Va. (March 29, 2025) … The Hampton Hampton University softball team continued its three-game series against Stony Brook this afternoon. The Pirates fell to the Seawolves 10-0 in seven frames. Coach Cat Tarvin's side kept the contest close through the first five innings. While the Pirates had baserunners throughout, HU could not drive runs in. The Seawolves took control of the contest late producing seven runs in the final two frames.

Leah Maduro got the start on the mound for the Pirates. The Sophomore faced adversity in the first inning. While Hampton quickly recorded two outs, a walk put runners on first and third for the Seawolves. Stony Brook during the next at-bat scored on the double steal attempt. The Pirates got out of the inning on a groundout to third base.

Hampton shifted the momentum in its favor in the bottom half of the first. With two outs, Kylie Hill tallied a base knock to the outfield. Maduro followed up the base hot with a double giving the Pirates two runners in scoring position. Stony Brook halted Hampton's offense getting out of the stanza with no harm.

Through the first five innings, Maduro had only given up three runs and held the Seawolves to five hits. Hampton had another opportunity to score in the bottom of the third. Carmynn Bonner led off the frame with a single up the middle. A Wild pitch during the next at-bat advanced Bonner to second. Maduro notched another hit advancing the baserunner to third. A groundout in the infield got Stony Brook out of the inning.

The Seawolves got the bats going in the final two frames. With four hits Stony Brook drove in four runs. A three-run home run by the Seawolves in the final inning made it 10-0. Hampton began the bottom of the seventh with a Riley Bohanon drawing a walk. Bohanon's time as a runner would be cut short as she was out trying to steal second base. With consecutive groundouts, Stony Brook ended the contest.
