Charleston, S.C. (March 8, 2025) … Charleston sisters Taryn Barbot (31) and Taylor Barbot (16) combined for 47 points as Charleston (23-6. 14-4) beat Hampton (7-22. 3-15) 93-66 before 481 fans at Charleston's TD Arena in the regular season finale for both teams.
CeCe Thomas led the Pirates with a season-high 17 points, including three three-pointers, while
Jasha Clinton came off the bench to score 12.
Hampton shot 47.1 percent from the field and clicked on eight three-pointers. But Charleston shot 54.8 percent from the field and made 19-of-20 from the free throw line while scoring 52 points in the paint.
Charleston took control in the early-going and clicked on back-to-back threes to start to the contest. The Cougars led 12-4 midway through the first quarter but a basket by Thomas and three-pointers by
Tyra Kennedy and
Aisha Dabo closed the gap to 12-10 with 4:12 to go. The two teams traded baskets and the lead with Dabo putting the Pirates ahead 17-16 late in the period. The Cougars responded by scoring the last five points of the quarter to lead 21-17. The Pirates shot 58.3 percent from the field with Dabo, Thomas, and Kennedy each scoring five points. Taryn Barbot had nine points on a trio of three-pointers to lead the Cougars.
The Charleston lead grew to 10, 29-19, in the second quarter after Barbot's fourth three-pointer of the game. The Cougars made five straight field goals to start the second quarter and advanced the lead to 35-23 before Thomas canned a long three-pointer. A 7-0 run gave the Cougars a 16-point advantage before a
Jasha Clinton trey. Charleston led 49-31 at intermission. The Cougars shot a sizzling 61.1 percent from the field, with 14 of the team's 20 field goals coming inside the paint. Barbot had 18 points at halftime with Thomas scoring 10 to lead the Pirates.
Converting seven shots inside the paint in the third quarter, Charleston led by as many as 29 points. The Cougars shot 70.0 percent from the field in the period and scored eight points on six Pirate turnovers. A 6-1 Pirate run at the end of the third quarter made it 76-54. Thomas scored seven of Hampton's 21 points in the period.
The Cougars expanded their lead to 27, late in the contest. A Foreman bucket followed by a Clinton trey helped close the gap but a 6-0 Charleston run late in the game propelled the Cougars to a 93-66 win, matching their largest lead of the game.
It was a busy four days for the Pirates. The bus trip from Hampton to UNCW on Wednesday afternoon was delayed until Thursday at 6:00 a.m. on game day. Following practice yesterday, the team made their way to Patriots Point, S.C. to cheer on the Pirate softball team against Charleston.
Charleston ended the regular season on an eight-game winning streak and has not lost since a 71-55 defeat at the hands of North Carolina A&T on Feb. 7.
The game concludes the 2024-25 regular season for both teams. The Credit Union 1 Coastal Athletic Association Women's Basketball Championship is slated for March 12-16 at CareFirst Arena in Washington, D.C.
Hampton opens the tournament on March 12 as the 13
th seed and will face 12
th-seeded Stony Brook at 2 p.m. The Pirates won the regular season matchup 59-57 on February 14 at Stony Brook.
