NORFOLK, Va. (Sept. 7, 2025) … A 35-yard free kick from
Makayla Wade found the back of the net for what turned into the equalizer on Sunday night as Hampton and Delaware State played to a 2-2 women's soccer draw at Powhatan Field.
Both teams combined for three goals in the first almost 13 minutes as Delaware State (2-3-1) started the scoring binge with Trinity Surowiec took a pass from Colleen Udoh at the top of the 18-yard box and found the left corner of the net at 7:36 for a 1-0 Hornets lead.
Hampton (3-3-1) answered almost four minutes later as
Nylah Jennings pushed a pass ahead to a streaking
Caitlyn Peace who weaved her way in and blasted one past an outstretched Johoanna Lynn Hornyak in goal to put the Pirates on the board at 11:21 for a 1-1 score.
The Hornets regained the lead 95 seconds later as Surowiec connected on a 30-yard free kick that sailed into the back of the net at 12:56 to push the lead to 2-1.
Wade responded to that long distance blast with one of her own as the Pirates were awarded a free kick from 35 yards out on the left side of the field at 39:27 and it found the net to even the match 2-2.
In the second half, both teams had a couple scoring chances but goalkeepers Madison Haney for Delaware State and
Annika Kleffmann along with starter
Avery John for Hampton provided no more tallies on the scoreboard.
On the night, the teams were even in shots at 15 and corner kicks with one each. Hampton goalies combined for 11 saves, while the Delaware State goalies combined for six.
Hampton is back in action on Wednesday at 12:30 facing Virginia State at Powhatan Field.
