FARMVILLE, Va. (Feb. 27, 2026) … The Hampton Pirates softball team opened play in the Bank of the James Invitational dropping a 12-0 decision to the Penn Quakers on Friday evening.
Penn scored two runs in the top of the third inning as Gigi Gainje doubled and eventually scored after a pair of wild pitches. Alexis Youngren walked and advanced to second before stealing third and scoring on an RBI groundout by Delaney Smith.
In the fourth, the Quakers put three more on the board as Dani Freer reached on a fielders choice to score Jade Montgomery. The Quakers then pulled a double steal as Freer stole second and Megan Huang stole home. Freer eventually scored on a ground ball.
Penn broke it open with a seven-spot in the fifth highlighted by a two-run single from Smith as they ended the game via the eight-run rule. The Quakers had four hits, but benefitted from 11 Hampton walks.
Hampton was paced by
Jayleen Reeves and
Carmynn Bonner who each went 1-for-2 to amass all of Hampton's hits.
Mackenzie Rimmer-Jones took the loss throwing four innings and allowing six runs on two hits.
The Pirates are back in tournament action tomorrow as they'll face Youngstown State at 12:30 and host Longwood at 3 p.m.
