Kiki McElrath scored 20 points and senior
Taylor Gibson added 12 points as Hampton dropped a 67-58 decision to Stony Brook on Friday night at the Stony Brook Arena.
The hosts opened the game scoring the first seven points as a pair of
Kiki McElrath free throws with 5:55 left in the first quarter put the Pirates on the board. Hampton opened missing its first six shots. McElrath drained a triple for Hampton's first bucket with 4:36 remaining.
The Seawolves closed the opening quarter hitting their last seven shots, going on a 10-0 run and holding Hampton 0-for-5 from field and scoreless in the last 2:19.
Hampton hit a triple to start the second as
Olivia Smith connected from distance. The Pirates clawed back into the contest on the heels of an 8-0 run as a steal and layup from Smith brought the Pirates to 26-22 with 5:20 left in the half forcing the Seawolves to take a minute to talk about things.
Taylor Gibson and
Kayla Lezama hit consecutive three-pointers before Smith ripped the ball away from Janay Brantley at midcourt.
That run grew to 11-0 as Gibson drained her second three-ball of the second quarter to pull Hampton to 26-25 with 4:59 remaining. The offense hit a wall of Seawolves as the hosts closed the quarter on a 6-0 burst with a layup from Chloe Oliver with a layup at the 2:59 mark.
The teams traded three-pointers to start the third quarter as Janay Brantley and Diaka Berete drained them for the hosts and McElrath hit her third of second of the game for the Pirates. Berete's second three-ball of the third put Stony Brook up 43-30 with 6:26 on the clock.
The advantage grew to 15 points twice in the third, the last being on a pair of Johanna Potter free throws to lead 49-34 at the 3:59 mark. Hampton closed the third on an 8-0 run with
Aisha Dabo scoring six of those eight. The last being on a baseline jumper with four seconds left as the Pirates trailed 49-42 after three.
The Pirates trimmed that deficit in the fourth to four behind a Gibson bucket off an
Olivia Smith assist to trail 51-47 with 7:50 left. Stony Brook responded with the next eight points to lead 59-47 following a Sandra Frau-Garcia driving layup with 4:21 left.
Hampton made one last spurt as Smith converted a layup with 68 seconds left to bring the margin to 62-55, but a Berete layup and a Frau-Garcia beat-the-shot clock triple from the corner iced the lead. McElrath drained a triple at the buzzer for the final margin.
Smith had nine points, eight assists and three steals, while Dabo added eight points.
Akilah Shelton blocked three shots to raise her total on the year to 45 for Hampton.
The Pirates close out this road swing visiting Northeastern on Sunday at 1 p.m.
