Venise Frazer was a stellar three-sport student-athlete during her matriculation at Hampton between 1984 and 1988, excelling in three sports – women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. Her claim to fame, however, was on the basketball court, although she was a stellar performer as a collegian in the other two sports, as well.
In basketball, Frazer was an integral part of the Lady Pirates’ squad that won the NCAA Division II national championship in the 1987-88 season, her final season at Hampton. During that dream season, she competed in 33 games and posted averages of 15.5 points and 12.0 rebounds a game. In the national championship game in 1988, she pulled down 12 rebounds and scored eight points in Hampton’s 65-48 victory over West Texas A&M.
As a freshman in 1984-85, Frazer played in 32 games and averaged 3.2 points a game, followed by averages of 6.1 points in 31 games as a sophomore in 1985-86 and 12.9 points in 31 games as a junior in 1986-87. She finished her career with 1,206 points and 1,124 rebounds. Frazer led the team in field goal percentage (.500) and rebounding (11.7 per game) in 1986-87, before leading the team in those categories (.516 field goal percentage, 12.0 rebounds per game) again in 1987-88.Â
Frazer reaped All-CIAA honors twice during her career. She also was a two-time Black College All-American and a two-time Fast Break All-American. In 1988, she made the Kodak All-District Team after being named the MVP of the NCAA South Atlantic Regional Championship.
In volleyball, Frazer reaped all-conference honors three times, including 1985, 1986 and 1987. She also made the All-CIAA team in volleyball those same years. In 1987, she was named the CIAA’s most valuable player.
Frazer competed on the Lady Pirates’ softball team for two seasons – 1986 and 1987. In 1987, she captured all-conference honors.
Frazer was inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame in 1999 and her jersey number, 10, is one of only three Lady Pirates’ jersey numbers to be officially retired.
