Shelia Hillman-Manderville was a three-time All-CIAA selection for the Lady Pirates in basketball, earning those honors in 1984, 1985 and 1986. On top of that, she also was named the CIAA women’s basketball player-of-the-year in 1986.
One of three Lady Pirates to have their jersey number retired, Hillman-Manderville tallied 1,249 points in her career. She also had 740 career assists with 329 career steals.
Having the reputation of being “quick as lightning,” Hillman-Manderville methodically got better with time. Her career started as a freshman in 1982-83 with her averaging 10.1 points, 6.2 assists and 2.6 steals per game. That was followed by averages of 10.4 points, 7.0 assists and 3.0 steals as a sophomore in 1983-84, and 10.9 points and 4.9 assists as a junior in 1984-85. Her final season saw her average 11.9 points, 7.5 assists and 3.0 steals in 1985-86.
Besides the CIAA honors, Hillman-Manderville was lauded for her exploits on the court by several other entities as well. She was named to the All-Freshman All-America Team by the National Association of Women’s Sports (NAWS) in 1983. The following season, as a sophomore, she was a second team member of the NAWS All-America Team.
The American Women’s Sports Foundation (AWSF) honored Hillman-Manderville by naming her to its All-America second team in 1984. As a senior in 1986, she was voted to the AWSF All-America fourth team.
In 1999, Hillman-Manderville was inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame, the same time that fellow Hamptonian Venise Frazer was so honored.
Hillman-Manderville is the proud mother of three daughters, Shawn, Kelly, and Essence. She spends most of her time with her grandchildren, Shala'e and Brandyn. Family time is the most important part of her life. Hillman-Manderville shares her love for the game by coaching youth at church, Trinity Baptist Church, and at Camelot Recreation Center.
