In track and field, Warren, who had earned All-America honors on the high school level, continued his prowess in the sprints and relays, ultimately becoming one of the most decorated track and field stars in Hampton history. He led the Pirates to three top three finishes at the NCAA Division II national championships during his career, including two times in outdoor competition and once indoors. He was named an NCAA All-American a school-record 11 times and he was an eight-time CIAA champion. Warren won the NCAA title in the 200-meter dash twice – in 1990 with a 20.67 time and in 1991 with a 20.65 clocking. He is one of only seven student-athletes in NCAA Division II history to win the 200-meter dash multiple times and one of only five to win it in consecutive years.

At the 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials, Warren posted the 32nd-fastest time in the world in the 200-meter dash, running a blistering 20.42. He was a U.S. Olympic Festival gold medalist in the 1600-meter relay in 1990 and a silver medalist at the Festival in 1989 in the 400-meter relay. He anchored the U.S. 400-meter relay team that won the gold at the 1988 IAFF World Junior Track and Field Championships in Sudbury, Ontario his freshman year and he won NCAA national outdoor championships in the 200-meters in both 1990 and 1991.

Warren walked onto the football team in 1990, promptly earning letters in 1990, 1991 and 1992. He averaged 25.8 yards per catch during his collegiate career. As a senior, he averaged 27.4 yards per reception and 9.9 yards per carry, both team highs, while also scoring 10 touchdowns. He carried the ball four times for 143 yards (35.7 yards per carry) with two touchdowns.

Warren became the first Pirate invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in 1993 and he later became the highest NFL draft pick when he was drafted in the fifth round of the 1993 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. He played for the Seahawks until 1995, when he joined the San Francisco 49ers. Warren then played for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1995-96 before joining the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL in 1997.
