Gregory “Dunkin’” Hines was a stalwart student-athlete at Hampton between 1979 and 1983, excelling as a forward/center for the men’s basketball program during a period that saw the program flourish while capturing CIAA championships each of his final two years as a collegian.
Hines started his career at Hampton by averaging 16.2 points during the 1979-80 season, earning CIAA rookie-of-the-year honors. But that was just the beginning. The Montclair, N.J. native would go on to post averages of 13.5 points as a sophomore in 1980-81, 15.1 points as a junior in 1981-82 and 20.5 points as a senior in 1982-83. He finished his career with 1,967 points, an average of 16.4 points per contest.
Much more than a scoring machine, Hines was equally adept on defense. His 1,254 career rebounds are second all-time, while his average of 10.5 boards per game is fifth on the list.
Hines, who holds degrees from Hampton in speech communication and physical education, earned numerous accolades while playing for the Pirates. In addition to his CIAA rookie-of-the-year award, he received all-conference honors in 1982-83 and he was tabbed the most valuable player of the 1982 CIAA tournament. Moreover, Hines earned various All-America honors three times.
Hines was a fifth round NBA draft pick by the Golden State Warriors and he went on to compete in the Continental Basketball Association, the United States Basketball League and the International Basketball League. His civic affiliations include serving as director of the Montclair Grass Roots organization, membership in the Glenfield Task Force, Inc., serving as a supporter of the Fourth Ward Community and membership in the Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
