LADY PIRATES TO HOST EAST CAROLINA

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will welcome the Pirates of East Carolina University to the HU Convocation Center on Saturday for a 6 p.m. match-up.

After opening the season with back-to-back wins, the Lady Pirates have lost five in a row – including a 54-51 heartbreaker to Temple on Tuesday at the HU Convocation Center. East Carolina will be playing its second straight road game, coming off its first loss of the season, when the Pirates fell 57-45 at Gardner-Webb on Saturday to break a seven-game winning streak.

East Carolina leads the all-time series with Hampton 4-0, including a 74-58 defeat last season on Nov. 15, 2008. The two teams first met on Feb. 5, 1985, when East Carolina beat the Lady Pirates 87-75. East Carolina's lone trip to Hampton came on Nov. 18, 1997, when ECU emerged with a 90-59 win.

ECU went 18-13 last season, finishing eighth in Conference USA with an 8-8 mark and falling 77-69 to SMU in the Conference USA tournament quarterfinals. LaCoya Terry was named First Team All-Conference USA after finishing second in the conference in scoring with 17.5 points a game, while Jasmine Young was a Third Team All-Conference USA and All-Defensive Team selection after averaging 11.2 points and a team-high 5.2 rebounds a game. Center Jean Best was an All-Freshman selection.

Sophomore guard Ashley Clarke is the Pirates' leading scorer so far this season, averaging 14.0 points a game – including a season-high 20 against Western Carolina. Junior guard Allison Spivey is second on the team in scoring, pouring in 11.1 points a night. Junior forward Kim Gay is the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 6.1 boards a night.

ECU is averaging 74.0 points a game on offense, while only giving up 60.1 a night. The Pirates also hold a 40.6-33.2 rebounds-per-game advantage.

The Lady Pirates are 2-9 all-time against schools from Conference-USA, including an 84-71 loss at Southern Methodist earlier this season. Hampton is 0-2 all-time against East Carolina, 1-3 against Saint Louis, 1-1 against Southern Mississippi, 0-1 against Tulane and 0-1 against UAB. Hampton lost to East Carolina (74-58) and Saint Louis (65-52) last season.

So far this season, the Lady Pirates are 2-1 at the HU Convocation Center, falling this past Tuesday 54-51 to Temple after opening the season with a 71-66 win over William & Mary and a 66-52 win over UNC-Wilmington. Hampton was 7-5 at home last season, including a 6-2 mark at home in MEAC play.
