LADY PIRATES BEAT BRYANT, FINISH THIRD IN FIU SUN & FUN

The Hampton University women's basketball team beat Bryant 68-48 in the consolation game of the Florida International Sun & Fun Classic at the U.S. Century Bank Arena on Tuesday to finish third in the tournament.

Hampton opened the second half on an 11-0 run, going up 42-26 with 15:35 to play after Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) sank a layup. Danielle Douglas gave Bryant its first field goal of the second half at the 15:21 mark, when she sank a jumper. Perry hit a jumper with 13:56 to play to extend the Lady Pirates' run to 17-2 and their lead to 48-28.

Hampton led by as many as 28, going up 68-40 with 1:42 to play on a free throw from Ryen Henry (Midlothian, Va.).

Senior Whitney Hill (Hampton, Va.) led three Lady Pirates in double figures with 22 points on 8-for-12 shooting, also going 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) hit five 3-pointers en route to 17 points, while Perry added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Breanna Jones (Springfield, Va.) led Hampton with 11 rebounds.

Kelsey O'Keefe led Bryant with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Hampton (4-8) shot 40.3 percent (27-for-67) from the floor, while also making five of 18 treys. Bryant shot 34.0 percent (18-for-53) from the floor, committing 21 turnovers. Hampton scored 24 points off those turnovers.

Bryant out-rebounded the Lady Pirates 41-40.

Hampton led by as much as nine in the first half, going up 26-17 with 3:50 left in the frame when Hill sank a pair of free throws. Bryant would cut the lead to five, going into the half down 31-26.

Jenkins led the Lady Pirates with 12 points in the first half behind four 3-pointers, while Jones had four rebounds. O'Keefe led Bryant with six points in the opening frame. Hampton shot 34.4 percent (11-for-32) from the floor, while Bryant shot 37.5 percent (9-for-24).

Bryant turned the ball over nine times in the first half.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Jan. 9, when they welcome Coppin State to the HU Convocation Center at 4 p.m. to open the bulk of MEAC play.
