LADY PIRATES DROP MEAC OPENER

Zykia Brown nailed a 3-pointer with two seconds to play Saturday evening at Burr Gymnasium to lead Howard over the Hampton University women's basketball team 48-47 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener for both teams.

The Lady Pirates (2-4, 0-1 MEAC) held a 47-45 lead with 1:24 to play after Tamoria Holmes hit a pair of free throws for the Bison. The next 1:22 saw four combined turnovers and a missed layup from Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas), before Brown hit the game-winning shot.

Hampton took a 41-30 lead with 8:18 to play on a jumper from Jenkins that capped a 14-2 run, but that would prove to be the team's last field goal of the game, as Howard closed on an 18-6 run.

Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the Lady Pirates with 14 points on 3-for-14 shooting and a 6-for-6 effort from the free throw line, while freshman Breanna Jones (Springfield, Va.) scored a career-high 13 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds.

Brown had a game-high 16 points to lead the Bison (3-4, 1-0), while Kara Smith and Saadia Doyle joined her in double figures with 10 points each. Doyle also led the Bison with 11 rebounds.

Howard shot 28.8 percent (15-for-52) for the game and 1-for-4 from 3-point range. The Lady Pirates shot 22.6 percent (12-for-53) from the floor and 5-for-20 from behind the arc. Hampton out-rebounded Howard 48-40, though the Bison forced the Lady Pirates into 24 turnovers, scoring 19 points off those miscues.

The Lady Pirates opened the game on an 8-2 run that culminated in a 3-point play from Jones, but the Bison responded with a 12-0 run to take a 14-8 lead after Brown hit a pair of free throws with 8:50 left in the first half. The lead expanded to 22-12 after Smith hit two more free throws at the 3:15 mark.

Howard held a 24-18 lead at halftime, thanks to an 8-for-19 (42.1 percent) shooting performance from the floor. The Lady Pirates shot 16.7 percent (5-for-30) in the first half.
