Game 1

Game 2

LYNCHBURG, Va. –
The Hampton University softball team split a doubleheader at Liberty on Tuesday, winning the first game 2-0 after losing the second game 5-1 at the Liberty Softball Field.

Hampton (14-14) struck first in the top of the third inning in the first game, thanks to a single from Ashley Weissenbach (Moreno Valley, Calif.) that brought in Evelyn Garcia (Poquoson, Va.). Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) added an RBI single in the top of the fourth, bringing in Jada Jeffries (Lithonia, Ga.).

From there, Amanda Black (Hamilton, Ontario) went the distance on the mound in picking up her ninth win of the season. Black gave up six hits in seven innings of work, striking out four and walking one. Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) led the Lady Pirates at the plate with two hits in three at-bats.

Liberty scored all five of its runs in the first three innings of the second game, including a three-spot in the bottom of the second. Beth Bennett and Ashley Bensinger each hit solo home runs in the inning for the Flames.

Bennett added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning.

Garcia got Hampton on the board in the top of the sixth inning, when she led off with a home run to left field. It was her second homer of the season.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Princess Anne, Md. to take on Maryland-Eastern Shore. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1 p.m., as will Sunday's game.
