CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Hampton University softball team lost to the University of Virginia 4-2 Wednesday evening at The Park on the campus of the University of Virginia.
Casey Steffan broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run to right-center field, then Clara Kendall gave the Cavaliers an insurance run later in the inning with an RBI groundout to short.
Senior
Evelyn Garcia (Poquoson, Va.) accounted for both of Hampton's runs in the evening. She scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning, then walked with a bases loaded in the top of the sixth to push across
Jada Jeffries (Lithonia, Ga.).
Steffan also had an RBI single on the evening, in the second inning, before Sarah Tacke added an RBI single of her own in the bottom of the fifth.
Amanda Black (Hamilton, Ontario) went six innings in the loss to go to 13-10 on the season, giving up seven hits and four runs – two of them earned. She also struck out five and walked three.
Garcia and
Tiffany Brents (Chino Hills, Calif.) each had one hit for Hampton (17-17).
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, April 25, when they travel to Dover, Del. to take on Delaware State. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1 p.m., with Sunday's game starting at noon.
