LADY PIRATES HEADING TO NORFOLK STATE

NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will look for its second straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win on the road, heading to Echols Hall on Saturday to take on Norfolk State at 4 p.m.

The Lady Pirates snapped a two-game losing streak on Monday in convincing fashion, beating Morgan State 74-37 at the HU Convocation Center on ESPNU. Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) led the Lady Pirates with a season-high 22 points on 6-for-11 shooting from 3-point range, while Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) recorded her third double-double of the season with a career-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Norfolk State has lost four straight following Monday's 58-47 loss at Florida A&M.

The Lady Pirates are 44-33 all-time against Norfolk State, dating back to the teams' days in the CIAA. The Lady Pirates won all three meetings last season, including a 68-49 win in the first round of the MEAC Championships. In all, Hampton has won six straight meetings against Norfolk State. The series began on Dec. 2, 1975, with Norfolk State winning 66-39. In fact, the Lady Spartans won the first nine meetings in the series, before Hampton finally won 72-48 on Jan. 14, 1980. In all, Hampton has won 22 of the last 26 games against Norfolk State, dating all the way back to 1998.

The Lady Spartans went 1-27 last season, finishing 11th in the MEAC with a 1-15 mark before falling to Hampton 68-49 in the first round of the MEAC Championships. Guard Marquilla Evans was named to the MEAC All-Rookie Team. Norfolk State was picked to finish 11th in the conference this season.

Sophomore guard Whitney Long leads the Lady Spartans in scoring at 11.4 points per contest, while Evans is pouring in 7.6 points a night. Freshman center Batavia Owens is Norfolk State's leading rebounder, pulling down 4.7 boards per contest.

Norfolk State is averaging 55.5 points a game on offense, while giving up 68.5 points per contest. The Lady Spartans are being out-rebounded by an average of 43.3-35.5 per contest.

Since joining the MEAC in 1995, the Lady Pirates are 213-133 against schools in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Hampton has a winning record over every school in the conference except for Howard; the Lady Pirates are 16-20 all-time against the Bison, and after Saturday's loss, they are tied 14-14 all-time with Coppin State. The Lady Pirates are 17-5 against Bethune-Cookman; 22-12 against Delaware State; 16-10 against Florida A&M; 28-6 against Maryland-Eastern Shore; 18-11 against Morgan State; 44-33 against Norfolk State; 17-12 against North Carolina A&T; and 20-10 against South Carolina State. Hampton has won three MEAC regular-season titles (1999, 2003, 2004 with Delaware State) and two MEAC Tournament titles (2003, 2004).

The Lady Pirates are 0-4 this season in true road games, falling at Richmond and at Southern Methodist, before also dropping games at Howard and Old Dominion. Hampton has not played a true road games since its Dec. 20 contest at ODU, which the Lady Pirates lost 64-83. Hampton is also 1-2 on neutral courts this season. The Lady Pirates are 0-1 on the road in MEAC play this season, falling 48-47 to Howard on Dec. 5.
