HAMPTON, Va. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team started fast and won big against the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman with an 81-44 win at the HU Convocation Center on Saturday evening.
The Lady Pirates (7-10, 3-3 MEAC) led with by 30 at the 15:40 mark in the second half, when
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) hit a 3-pointer. Hampton went on a 19-8 run over a span of eight minutes in the second half; in that span Jenkins hit four of her career-high eight 3-pointers.
Junior
Laura Lewis (Dallas, Texas) hit a 3-pointer at the 4:18 mark of the second half to give the Lady Pirates a 72-30 margin, which was their largest lead of the game.
The Lady Pirates started the game off with 22-7 run, with
Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) scoring eight of her 16 points in that 12-minute span.
Jenkins had a career-high with 31 points and six assists, and sophomore
Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 12 points and six assists in the win.
“Coming in to this game against Bethune-Cookman, I felt very confident in my shot,” said Jenkins. “I usually take a lot of 3-point shots in games; this game I just made more than I missed. Coach (David) Six called plays for me and I had a hot hand. I am really happy for our team and our big conference win.”
Hampton forced 20 turnovers while only committing six – its lowest turnover total since turning the ball over just five times on Jan. 31, 1992 against Winston-Salem State. The Lady Pirates scored 19 points off the Lady Wildcats' turnovers.
Offensively, the Lady Pirates shot 44.0 percent (11-for-25) from the 3-point line and 45.6 percent (31-for-68) from the floor. Hampton out-rebounded the Lady Wildcats (7-10, 3-3 MEAC) 37-35, with
Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) pulling down a career-high nine boards to lead the Lady Pirates.
Sarah Bolden led Bethune-Cookman with 10 points on the evening, while Demetria Frank and Parress Davis each pulled down five rebounds. The Lady Wildcats shot 15-for-44 (34.1 percent) from the floor, missing all four of their 3-point attempts.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Monday, when they will face the Lady Rattlers of Florida A&M at 6 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center.
