HAMPTON, Va. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team came out with its stingy “D” and defeated the Lady Rattlers of Florida A&M 67-54 at the HU Convocation Center on Monday night.
The Lady Pirates (8-10, 4-3 MEAC) led the entire game, holding the Lady Rattlers to only one field goal in a 6-minute span twice in the second half.
Sophomore guard Tameka McKelton made a jumper at the 7:45 mark of the second half to get the Lady Rattlers within eight; however, that was the closest they got. Senior
Whitney Hill sparked the Lady Pirates off the bench in the second half with eight points and two assists.
The Lady Pirates started the game with a 21-8 run with a 3-pointer by
Jericka Jenkins, followed plays later by a 3-pointer by guard
Choicetta McMillian to give the Lady Pirates a 17-point lead.
MEAC Player of the Week
Quanneisha Perry recorded her sixth double-double this year, pouring in 19 points to go along with a season-high 19 rebounds and two assists. Jenkins contributed 12 points and a team-high six assists in the Lady Pirates' victory.
“Well first of all, I just really realize how terrible I was playing and I wasn't being fair to my teammates or myself,” Perry said about having four double-doubles out of her last five games. “I wanted to turn it around because I wasn't playing like I wanted to win the (MEAC) championship.”
The Lady Rattlers were held to 28.0 percent shooting and 15.4 percent in the second, which is the lowest percentage the Lady Pirates have allowed this season.
The Lady Pirates had 20 assists compared to just four for Florida A&M, which is the second lowest the Lady Pirates allowed this year.
Tameka McKelton had 20 points and five rebounds for the Lady Rattlers, while LaShonda Gaines added 11 points and two assists.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they face the Lady Hornets of Delaware State at 4 p.m. at the Memorial Hall Gym.
