HAMPTON, Va. -- The Lady Pirates (8-10, 4-3 MEAC) will return to action on Saturday, when they face the Lady Hornets of Delaware State (3-16, 1-5 MEAC) at 2 p.m. at Memorial Hall.
Hampton came out with its stingy “D” and defeated the Lady Rattlers of Florida A&M 67-54 at the HU Convocation Center on Monday night for its second straight win. Junior
Quanneisha Perry had another huge game, pouring in 19 points to go along with 19 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.
Former Lady Pirate Sharella Leslie scored the game-winning basket with 0.8 seconds remaining the last time these two teams met to give Hampton a dramatic 58-56 win over Delaware State in a hard-fought quarterfinal game in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's tournament at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum. The Lady Pirates also beat Delaware State on Feb. 7, coming out on top 68-64 in overtime.
Delaware State has been picked to finish fourth in the 2009-10 MEAC women's basketball regular-season race, according to a poll of league head coaches and sports information directors. Delaware State was third in the MEAC with an 11-5 league record during the 2008-09 season. The Lady Hornets handed North Carolina A&T its only conference loss last season, winning 68-66 in Memorial Hall on Feb. 16.
Senior guard Selena Galloway is leading the team in scoring with 10.1 points a game; while junior forward Brittany Washington is leading the team in rebounds averaging 7.1 per contest.
The Lady Hornets are averaging 47.6 points a game, but are allowing 59.1 points a game.
Delaware averages 7.3 assists a game, yet commits 19.6 turnovers a game.
