DOVER, Del. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team (9-10, 5-3 MEAC) made it three wins in a row against the Lady Hornets of Delaware State (3-17, 1-6 MEAC) with a 62-43 victory at the Memorial Hall on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Pirates led by 27 at the 8:23 mark, when
Laura Lewis (Dallas, Texas) sank a 3-pointer. Hampton went on a 19-8 run over a span of eight minutes in the second half; a span in which they forced the Lady Hornets to commit nine turnovers.
Hampton started the game on a 14-2 run, when
Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) hit a jumper at the 12:39 mark.
The Lady Hornets got within nine when Alex Abraham hit a jumper at the 5:01 of the first half, yet that was the closest that got to the Lady Pirates.
Fortune and
Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) led the team in scoring with 16 points respectively. Fortune also had four assists and Perry had 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) also contributed with 13 points and six assists.
"Well today, I just came out and played my game, I took open shots and they were falling for me tonight," said Fortune about her scoring in double figures. "As for our team, we stick to the Coach (
David Six) game plan and we execute."
The Lady Pirates forced the Lady Hornets to commit 22 turnovers, and they scored 25 points off those turnovers. Hampton was big on the offensive rebounding side; the Lady Pirates had 18 offensive rebounds and turned them into 17 second-chance points. Alex Abraham led the Lady Hornets with 10 points and three rebounds.
The Lady Pirates are heading to the William P.
