PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team (9-10, 5-3 MEAC) will return to action on Monday, when they face the Lady Hawks of the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (7-10, 4-3 MEAC) at 6 p.m. at William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
Hampton made it three wins in a row against the Lady Hornets of Delaware State with a 62-43 victory at the Memorial Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.)and
Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.)led the team in scoring with 16 points respectively. Fortune also had four assists and Perry had 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas)also contributed with 13 points and six assists.
The Lady Pirates forced the Lady Hornets to commit 22 turnovers, and they scored 25 points off those turnovers. Hampton was big on the offensive rebounding side; the Lady Pirates had 18 offensive rebounds and turned them into 17 second-chance points.
The last time the two teams played, the Lady Pirates stomped the Lady Hawks 57-47 in the HU Convocation Center on Feb. 9, 2009. The Lady Pirates are leading the series 28-6, and they have won the last past four match-ups.
The Lady Hawks finished 17-13 last season. It was the first time in 17 years that the program recorded that many wins, matching a school record. With two games to go in the season, UMES was two wins away from a second-place Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) finish. Those two games turned to losses and a tiebreaker system dropped the Lady Hawks all the way to the fifth seed in the conference tournament.
April McBride (6-0, F, New Rochelle, N.Y.) was incredible for UMES last season, earning MEAC Player of the Week three times. She led the team in five categories and was the only player to start in all 30 games. She is currently leading the team in points and rebounds, averaging 15.6 and 8.6 per contest.
The Lady Hawks averages 59.1 points a game while allowing, 62.2 points per contest. They are grabbing 38.1 rebounds a game, and their opponents are only grabbing 36.6 per contest.
