LADY PIRATES DROP DEFENSIVE STRUGGLE TO JACKSONVILLE

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team lost a hard-fought, defensive battle on Saturday at the HU Convocation Center, as Jacksonville University escaped with a 49-42 win.

The Lady Pirates (1-4) took a 40-39 lead with 3:26 left to play, when senior forward Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) sank a jumper to cap a 16-8 run for Hampton. But the Dolphins would respond, going on a 10-2 spurt over the last few minutes. Perry fouled out with 2:21 remaining, and layups from Lynsey Paschal and Ashanti Williams helped seal the deal.

Jacksonville (4-1) also made six of eight free throws down the stretch.

Perry led the Lady Pirates with 12 points on 5-for-12 shooting, while junior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.

Sophomore forward Delia Brunson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) added a career-high nine rebounds, while sophomore forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) tied her career high with eight rebounds to go along with six points. Junior center Sherena Abercrumbia (Dallas, Texas) tied her season high with six points.

Hampton shot 25.8 percent (17-for-66) from the floor, missing all eight of its 3-point attempts. The Lady Pirates did out-rebound the Dolphins 46-37, and Hampton forced Jacksonville into 28 turnovers.

Paschal led the Dolphins with a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds.

Jacksonville opened the game on a 9-0 run, taking its largest lead of the first half after Taneskei Richardson sank a layup with 15:49 to go in the frame. But the Lady Pirates responded, as Perry sank a layup to give Hampton its first field goal at the 15:29 mark.

Hampton went on to close out the half on an 18-8 run, holding the Dolphins without a field goal for nearly 11 minutes. Paschal hit a jump with 10:59 left in the half, but Jacksonville wouldn't hit another field goal until eight seconds before the half, when Paschal sank a layup.

Perry sank a layup at the 6:48 mark to tie the game at 14-14, before hitting a free throw 14 seconds later to give Hampton the lead.

The Lady Pirates led 18-17 at the half, despite shooting just 17.6 percent (6-for-34) in the opening 20 minutes. Hampton forced Jacksonville into 15 first-half turnovers, turning them into 11 points, while also out-rebounding the Dolphins 24-23 – including 10 offensive boards.

Perry led Hampton with six first-half points, while Warner added five points and a team-high seven first-half rebounds. Paschal led Jacksonville with six points at the half.
