HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team scored 41 points in the second half en route to a 68-52 win over Howard at the HU Convocation Center on Saturday.
Saadia Doyle hit a 3-pointer with 13:47 left in the second half to pull Howard within three, as the Lady Pirates had a 38-35 lead. But Hampton (3-4, 1-0 MEAC) outscored the Bison 30-17 the rest of the way, pulling out to a 13-point lead when junior guard
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) nailed a 3-pointer with 8:58 to play to give Hampton a 48-35 lead.
Senior guard
Laura Lewis (Dallas, Texas) sank a layup with 3:01 to play to put Hampton up 57-43. The Lady Pirates then made nine of 13 free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.
Jenkins led the Lady Pirates with 17 points, all in the second half, on 5-for-11 shooting and a 3-for-8 effort from behind the arc. Senior forward
Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) and junior guard
Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) also scored in double figures; Perry poured in 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting, while McMillian scored 13 behind the stretch of three 3-pointers.
Lewis pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for the Lady Pirates. Jenkins added a team-high six assists.
Hampton shot 47.8 percent (20-for-42) from the floor, while also going 9-for-22 (40.9 percent) from 3-point range. The Lady Pirates out-rebounded Howard (3-7, 0-1 MEAC) 36-29. The Bison shot 36.4 percent (20-for-55) from the floor, making just 57.1 percent (8-for-14) of their free throws.
Doyle led the Bison with 15 points and 10 rebounds, going 6-for-15 from the floor.
The Lady Pirates took a 27-24 lead into the half, shooting 42.1 percent (8-for-19) from the floor and making four of their nine 3-point attempts. A trey from Warner at the 9:33 mark capped an 8-2 Hampton run and put the Lady Pirates up 18-12, before Howard responded with a 9-2 run to take a 21-20 lead on a Julee O'Neal 3-pointer with 4:24 left in the half.
But a 3-point play by junior center
Sherena Abercrumbia (Dallas, Texas) at the 4:06 mark gave the lead back to the Lady Pirates.
Warner, Perry and Abercrumbia led the Lady Pirates with six points each at the half.
Doyle and O'Neal led Howard with five first-half points each, as the Bison shot 40.0 percent (10-for-25) from the floor. Hampton out-rebounded Howard 15-14 in the first half.
