GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will look for its third straight win on Wednesday, when the Lady Pirates take to the road to face East Carolina at Minges Coliseum at 7 p.m.
The Lady Pirates (3-4), in their second season under head coach
David Six, won their second straight game on Saturday, beating Howard 68-52 at the HU Convocation Center. Junior guard
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas), seeing her first action since Nov. 15 at South Dakota State, led the Lady Pirates with 17 points – all in the second half – and six assists. Senior forward
Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) added 15 points, while junior guard
Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) added 13.
East Carolina (4-4) had its two-game winning streak snapped on Sunday with a 79-61 loss to Charlotte. Sophomore guard Shala Hodges led three ECU players in double figures with 11 points, while junior guard Ashley Clarke and senior guard Allison Spivey each scored 10. Junior center Jean Best pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Hampton is 0-5 all-time against East Carolina, dropping last year's meeting between the two teams 65-61 at the HU Convocation Center. ECU won the last meeting at Minges Coliseum on Nov. 14, 2008 by a score of 74-58. The two teams first met on Feb. 5, 1985, with ECU winning 87-75.
Four of the five meetings between the two teams have been played in Greenville, N.C.
East Carolina returns all five starters and 12 letterwinners overall from a team that went 23-11 in the 2009-10 season, finishing fifth in Conference USA with a 9-7 mark and advancing to the second round of the WNIT. The Pirates do, however, have a new coach, as Heather Macy enters her first season guiding the program.
Clarke leads the team in scoring through eight games this season, averaging 12.1 points per game, while senior forward Kim Gay is pouring in 11.6 points a night and pulling down a team-high 5.6 rebounds per contest.
East Carolina is averaging 77.2 points per game on offense, while giving up 72.9 points a night.
So far this season, the Lady Pirates are 2-2 on the road, having defeated James Madison 69-64 in the first round of the Preseason WNIT before falling 76-64 at South Dakota State and 64-57 at Charlotte. Hampton defeated Radford 52-51 on the road. Six is 8-9 on the road for his career as a head coach.
