PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team made it four in a row against the Lady Hawks of Maryland-Eastern Shore on Monday with a 64-48 win at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.
The Lady Pirates (10-10, 6-3 MEAC), took over and led the entire second half. At the 7:19 mark of the second half,
Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) hit a jumper to give the Lady Pirates a 47-33 lead.
With a made free throw by the Lady Hawks' Amber Cook at the 3:25 mark, UMES got within 11 with the score 49-38; however, that was the closest they got in the second half. The Lady Pirates were consistent down there stretch shooting 76.2% from the free-throw stripe in the second half.
The first half was a tight affair between the two teams; the score was tied three times and there were five lead changes. Both teams struggled from the floor; the Lady Pirates shot 29 percent, while the Lady Hawks shot 30 percent.
Hampton ended the first half on a 14-7 run, with
Whitney Hill (Hampton, Va.) leading the way with ten points in the first half.
The Lady Pirates were led by Perry with 17 points and 14 rebounds, good enough for her eight double-double of the season. Hill gave the Lady Pirates a spark off the bench with 16 points, while
Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) had 15 points and a team-high five steals.
"My spark was basically getting the chance to come in to play and add some offensive intensity by penetrating to the basketball,” Hill said. “We are trying to end the season going 12-0, we've got four wins and we are looking for eight more. We are hungry and we want to win.”
The Lady Hawks was led by senior forward April McBride, who had 18 points and four rebounds.
Hampton shot 35.8 percent from the floor, while holding the Lady Hawks to 33.3 percent shooting from the field.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they face the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State at 2 p.m. at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
