LADY PIRATES SURGE PAST LADY SPARTANS

HAMPTON, Va
. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team stretched its winning streak to seven against the Lady Spartans of Norfolk State with a 68-46 beating at the HU Convocation on Saturday evening. 

The Lady Pirates (13-10, 8-3 MEAC), started off slow but ended with a bang. A lay-up by Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.)at the 16:50 mark of the second half started a 24-4 run for the Lady Pirates, which ended with a lay-up by Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.)at the 7:26 mark to make it a 65-35 game.

 Both teams went into a scoring drought that lasted a little over four minutes late in the second half. The Lady Spartans ended the game on a 12-3 run, but was not enough to stop the bleeding. 

The first half started with both team exchanging baskets. With a 3-pointer by Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas)at 9:05, the Lady Pirates began a 15-5 run which gave them a 20-point (40-20) lead at the 3:26 mark.

 The Lady Pirates were lead by the Defensive Player of the Week Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.), who had 11 points, 16 rebounds, and four steals; it was her ninth double-double of the year. McMillan, who tied a career-high in 3-pointers made with four, and Bernadette Fortune both had 14 points and four assists. Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas)also contributed with 11 points. 

“After I came out the first time (in the first half), I knew I had to re-focus and get my mind right. (NSU) clamped down on me in the second half they didn't help off as much; which opened up Jericka and Q,” said McMillian. “We expect a brawl with (North Carolina) A&T on Monday, like it always is.” 

Hampton forced 25 turnovers and scored 30 points off the Lady Spartans' mistakes. The Lady Pirates were big in the paint, scoring 32 points and collected 43 rebounds. The Lady Pirates shot 38.2 percent from the field; however, the Lady Spartans shot 40.5 percent. 

The Lady Spartans were led by Raychele Payne with 16 points and six rebounds. 

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Monday, when they face the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T at 6 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center.
