LADY PIRATES BIT BY LADY WILDCATS

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team (14-11, 9-4 MEAC) lost a tough game against the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman 62-53 at Moore Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. 

Hampton struggled throughout the second half. A jumper by Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.)at the 19:44 mark of the second half tied the game at 25 apiece. But the Lady Wildcats went on a 13-0 run over the next nine minutes (40-27), which concluded with a jumper by Euneshia Proctor. A 3-pointer by Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.)at the 2:30 mark got the Lady Pirates within eight (49-41), but that was the closest they got. The Lady Wildcats were consistent with their free throws, shooting 72 percent from the charity stripe in the second half. 

The first half was very competitive. A layup by Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.)at the 15:23 mark gave the Lady Pirates a four-point lead (10-6). A steal and layup by Sarah Proctor gave the Lady Wildcats a 14-13 lead at the 11:13 mark. The first half had six lead changes and five times the score was tied. Perry made a jumper at the 4:06 mark ties the game up at 21-21. With six seconds left in the first half, a backdown lay-up by Sharnese Neal gave the Lady Wildcats a 25-23 lead heading into the intermission. 

The National Player of the Week and MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, Perry had her 10th double-double of the season with a team-high 16 points and 12 rebounds. Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) contributed 12 points and four rebounds.

 The Lady Pirates forced 22 turnovers but committed 21 themselves. Hampton shot 37 percent from the field, but allowed the Lady Wildcats to shoot 54.1 percent, which is a season team-high for an opponent. The Lady Pirates struggled from the line, shooting 50 percent (8-for-16) while allowing their opponent to shoot 72.4 percent (21-for-29) from the free-throw stripe. 

The Lady Wildcats were led by Sarah Bolden with 19 points and Demitria Frank had 17 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. 

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Monday, when they face the Lady Rattlers of Florida A&M at 5:30 p.m. at the Gaither Gymnasium.
