LADY PIRATES DROP TWO TO CANISIUS

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Canisius College on Sunday, dropping the second game 5-1 after losing the first game 12-1 in five innings.

The Griffins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game after Lauren Hope scored on a groundout by Paige Freiberger. Lizzy Gatto then scored during a rundown that eventually ended the inning.

Canisius added two more runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Michelle Fridey, who later scored on a throwing error. Gatto added an RBI single in the fifth inning.

Bre'Anna Brown (Los Angeles, Calif.) drove in Hampton's only run in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI single.

Gatto went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring twice and driving in a run. Amanda Baun went all seven innings in the second game for the Griffins, giving up five hits and striking out 10.

Canisius took a 3-1 lead in the second inning of the first game after Hope doubled home a run and Fridey added an RBI single. Katie Lancelotti added an RBI double in the fourth inning to put the Griffins up 4-1, before Canisius exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning.

Hope drove in a pair of runs in that frame with a double, while Stephanie Pfentner added a two-run single of her own.

Kelsei Saunders (Suffolk, Va.) drove in Hampton's lone run in the first inning of the first game, hitting a double to bring home Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.).

Caroline Main went all five innings for Canisius, striking out five and giving up just three hits.
