LADY PIRATES PREPARE FOR LADY HORNETS

Game Notes

HAMPTON, Va. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team (15-11, 10-4 MEAC) will return home to host the Lady Hornets of Delaware State (6-21, 4-9 MEAC) Saturday evening at the HU Convocation Center at 4 p.m.

The Lady Pirates bounced back into the win column Monday night, defeating the Lady Rattlers of Florida A&M 65-48 at the Al Lawson Center. The Lady Pirates were led by Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) with 17 points and four assists. Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) had 12 points, while Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) had six points and a career-high 10 assists.

Hampton is 23-12 all-time against Delaware State, including a 62-43 road win earlier this season on Jan. 30. After taking the first match-up on Feb. 7, 2009, the Lady Pirates eliminated Delaware State 58-56 in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament. Hampton has won nine out of the last 10 meetings against the Lady Hornets. The only victory for Delaware State in that span came on Feb. 9, 2008, when the score was 58-36. The Lady Pirates have won nine out of the last 10 games, beating their opponents by an average of 20 points per game. Delaware State has been picked to finish fourth in the 2009-10 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women's basketball regular-season race, according to a poll of league head coaches and sports information representatives.

Delaware State was third in the MEAC with an 11-5 league record during the 2008-09 season. The Lady Hornets handed North Carolina A&T its only conference loss last season, winning 68-66 in Memorial Hall on Feb. 16. The Lady Hornets return just one starter and four back-ups from last season, which featured a 15-15 overall record and a rare loss in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament quarterfinals. The .500 record during the 2008-09 campaign snapped a string of six straight winning seasons for DSU, which also failed to reach the MEAC Tournament semifinals for just the third time in the last nine years.

Senior guard Selena Galloway is leading the team in scoring with 9.2 points a game, while junior forward Brittany Washington is leading the team in rebounds, averaging 8.0 per contest.

The Lady Hornets are averaging 48.6 points a game, but are allowing 56.9 points per contest. Delaware State averages 7.0 assists a game, yet commits 18.8 turnovers a game.

The Lady Pirates are 8-3 this season in home games, beating Florida A&M 11, Bethune-Cookman by 37, Morgan State by 37, Norfolk State by 21, Radford by 20, UNC-Wilmington by six and William & Mary by five. Hampton is 5-1 in MEAC home games so far this season.
