Box Score

HAMPTON, Va. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team (16-11, 11-4 MEAC) made it two wins in a row Saturday evening, defeating the Lady Hornets of Delaware State 47-41 at the HU Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates started off slow but ended with a roar. Hampton started the second half with a 3-pointer by Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) at the 19:06 mark. The Lady Hornets got within five (25-20) with a layup by Courtney Crockett, but the Lady Pirates started to run away with a 12-2 run, which gave them the largest lead (39-25) in a 4:33 span. With 2:37 left in the game, a free throw made by the Lady Hornets' Selena Galloway got Delaware State within four (41-37). But layups by McMillian and Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) with seconds to go ended any threats by the Lady Hornets.

The Lady Pirates shot 41.7 percent (10-for-24) from the floor in the second half and shot 72.7 percent (8-for-11) from the free throw line.

The first half was a shooting struggle for both teams. The first point of the game came from Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) at the free throw line at the 18:14 mark. A 3-pointer by the Lady Hornets' Alexis Abraham tied the game at 9-9 at the 9:16 mark. The Lady Pirates had a 5-0 spurt, which ended with a 3-point basket by McMillian at the 6:20 mark. “We try to feed off each other, but we didn't start off that well. I don't think we were as focused as we should have been,” said McMillian. “(Delaware State) went on a late run, but we settled down, took a deep breath and finished strong.”

The Lady Pirates only allowed the Lady Hornets to shoot 29.3 percent from the field and 15.4 percent from the 3-point line. They also forced Delaware State into 23 turnovers.

The Lady Hornets were lead by Courtney Crockett with12 points and three rebounds.
