ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team (10-10, 6-3 MEAC) will try to make in five wins in a row against the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State ( 6-14, 1-7 MEAC) on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Hampton won its fourth straight against the Lady Hawks of the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore with 64-48 win at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center on Monday. The Lady Pirates were led by
Quanneisha Perry with 17 points and 14 rebounds, good enough for her eighth double-double of the season. Senior
Whitney Hill gave the Lady Pirates a spark off the bench with 16 points, while
Melanie Warner had 15 points and a team-high five steals.
Hampton shot 35.8 percent from the floor, while holding the Lady Hawks to 33.3 percent shooting.
The Lady Pirates are 20-10 all-time against South Carolina State. Hampton has won five of the last six meetings against the Lady Bulldogs, including last year's 77-59 win at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center on Feb. 15, 2009.
South Carolina State is will be looking to improve on its 6-23 record from last season. The Lady Bulldogs have somewhat of a new look, as they have 11 new faces and two new coaches on their bench to start the 2009-10 campaign. One familiar face to the fans will be senior Sophilia Hipps (5-8, guard, Spencer, N.C.), who is the team's top returnee. She finished the 2008-09 campaign averaging 14.3 points per game and shooting 80 percent from the charity stripe. Also returning to this year's squad is junior Shontae Wylie (5-9, guard/forward, Rock Hill, S.C.) along with sophomores LaTeia Brailey (5-4, guard, Orangeburg, S.C.) and Brijan Turner (5-6, guard, Cypress, Texas).
Hipps and Wylie are leading the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 13.8 points per contest. Freshman Paris Alston is leading the team in rebounds with 6.2 per game.
The Lady Bulldogs are averaging 62 points per game, but are allowing their opponents to score 68.2 per contest. South Carolina State is averaging 36.9 boards a game, while their opponents are averaging 39.1 per contest.
