SOFTBALL WINS ONE AT AGGIE TOURNAMENT

GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The Hampton University softball team competed in the Aggie Tournament at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, beating Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday.

The Lady Pirates (3-7) beat UMES 13-0 in five innings on Friday for its lone win of the tournament. Brooke Boykin (Riverside, Calif.) and Bre'Anna Brown (Los Angeles, Calif.) each went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Tamara Vickers (Lawndale, Calif.) and Tiffany Brents (Chino Hills, Calif.) each went 2-for-4. Boykin drove in five runs and scored two more as the Lady Pirates had 10 hits.

Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.), who was named to the All-Tournament team, gave up just one hit in five innings of work, walking two and striking out six for her second win of the season.

After plating a pair in the first inning against UMES – thanks to a passed ball and an RBI single from Brown – the Lady Pirates erupted for eight runs in the third inning. Boykin doubled home three runs in that inning, and Hampton scored twice on a pair of wild pitches.

The Lady Pirates scored three more runs in the fourth inning, with Boykin driving home a pair with a single to left field and Vickers singling home another run.

Hampton opened play on Friday with a 12-0, five-inning loss to Appalachian State. The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, before exploding in the fourth inning for five runs and scoring six more in the fifth.

Appalachian State had 11 hits overall, with McKenzie Phillips going 2-for-3 and Megan Rembielak went 2-for-4. Sarah Rappe led the Mountaineers with three RBI – including a two-run triple in the fourth inning.
Caitlin Wainwright went the distance for Appalachian State, giving up just one hit, walking one and striking out eight.

Tournament host North Carolina A&T beat Hampton 5-1 on Saturday behind seven strong innings from Jennifer Luper. The Aggies scored in each of the first three innings, pushing one across in the bottom of the first inning before scoring a pair each in the second and third innings.

The Lady Pirates picked up their run in the fifth inning, with Byrd scoring on a Boykin groundout.

Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.) had two of Hampton's four hits against North Carolina A&T, with Byrd and Carla Trimble also recording hits.

Coppin State beat the Lady Pirates 4-2 on Sunday, despite Hampton recording six hits. The Lady Eagles held a 3-0 lead after three innings thanks to a pair of RBI doubles, but Hampton responded with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning when Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) and Magett each had RBI singles.

Coppin State answered with an insurance run in the bottom of the inning.

Paige Arnold went the distance for the Lady Eagles, giving up six hits, walking one and striking out six.

Magett went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lady Pirates.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Wednesday, when they welcome the Cavaliers of the University of Virginia to Lady Pirates Field for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. It will be Green Day, and any fan in attendance wearing green will be able to buy a hot dog for 75 cents.
