SOFTBALL FINISHES DAY TWO OF MIDWEEK INVITE

Box Scores: George Mason | Mount St. Mary's

FAIRFAX, Va. –
The Hampton University softball team lost both of its games on Wednesday in the second day of the MidWeek Spring Invitational, falling 4-3 to tournament host George Mason before losing 8-0 in six innings to Mount St. Mary's at George Mason Field.

The Patriots struck first in the first game, scoring three runs in the top of the third inning, thanks to RBI singles from Tori Dudley, Rachael Davies and Becky Anderson. But the Lady Pirates (4-12) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on a double down the left-field line from senior Jada Jeffries (Lithonia, Ga.).

Davies added a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning to give the Patriots (2-6) an insurance run. Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) hit a single in the bottom of the sixth inning, after which Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) scored on a throwing error, but that was as far as the Lady Pirates would get.

Tamara Vickers (Lawndale, Calif.) led the Lady Pirates at the plate, going 2-for-4. Jeffries went all seven innings on the mound, striking out four and walking just one as she gave up five hits.

Amanda Buffington picked up her first win of the season for the Patriots, going seven innings and striking out seven.

Mount St. Mary's jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Lady Pirates after the first inning of the second game. After Nicole Reeder drove in a run on a groundout, Beth Everist doubled to left-center field to bring home two more runs.

The Mounts (11-5) would score five more in the sixth inning, thanks in large part to RBI singles from Courtney Zingle, Amanda Buckel and Everist.

Amanda Sadowl held the Lady Pirates to just three hits in the contest, striking out two and walking four in six innings of work.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, when they host the Lady Pirates Classic – starting Friday with a game against Coppin State at 9 a.m. For more information on Hampton University softball, please call the office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5811, or visit the official Pirates website at www.hamptonpirates.com.
