WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The No. 2 seed Lady Pirates (17-11, 12-4 MEAC) will return to action on Friday, when they face the No. 6 seed Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman (17-14, 9-7 MEAC) at 2:30 p.m. at the L. Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C. in the semifinals of the 2010 MEAC Championships.
Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) poured in a career-high 22 points and corralled 10 rebounds, and
Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) added a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds (her 11th of the year) to lead Hampton University to an easy 65-41 win over the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum. No. 6 seed Bethune-Cookman advanced to the semifinals by virtue of its 63-52 quarterfinal win over Morgan State.
The Lady Pirates are 18-6 all-time against Bethune-Cookman. The teams split the regular season, with both teams winning at home. The Lady Pirates won 81-44 win at the HU Convocation Center on Jan. 23 and the Lady Wildcats won at the Moore Gymnasium 62-53 on Feb. 20. Hampton has won five of the last six games against the Lady Wildcats, dating back to Jan. 6, 2007. Hampton won the first-ever meeting between the two teams on Jan. 2, 1997, 73-67 at the HU Convocation Center. From 1999-2003, the Lady Pirates won six straight over Bethune-Cookman.
The Lady Pirates have won 12 out of the last 13 games, beating their opponents by an average of 22 points per game. Bethune- Cookman has won two straight games, beating Norfolk State in the opening round of the tournament before beating Morgan State in the quarterfinals.
The Lady Wildcats went 12-17 last season and 4-12 in conference play. Bethune is looking to surprise a lot of teams this season, as the Lady Wildcats have been projected to finish ninth in the MEAC in 2009-10.
Junior center Sarah Bolden was named Preseason All- MEAC First Team and junior guard Demetria Frank also earned a spot on the Preseason All-MEAC second team. Frank is leading the team in scoring and steals with 14.1 points and 3.0 steals per contest. Bolden is nearly averaging a double-double, with 9.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
Bethune-Cookman is averaging 62.9 per game on offense, while its defense gives up 67.4 points a night. The Lady Wildcats are committing19.4 turnovers a game, while forcing 19.0 turnovers a contest.
