OUTDOOR TRACK CONTINUES FOR LADY PIRATES, STARTS FOR PIRATES

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University men's and women's track & field teams will return to action this weekend, as the Lady Pirates head to Florida and the Pirates open their 2010 outdoor season in Alabama.

The Lady Pirates will head to Orlando, Fla. for the Central Florida Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Pirates, who haven't competed since the IC4A Indoor Championships on March 6-7, will head to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the Alabama Relays Wednesday-Saturday.

Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at the Shamrock Invitational this past weekend with a time of 1:01.72, before also finishing fourth in the women's heptathlon with 4,391 points. She won the high jump portion at 1.67 meters, before also finishing third in the 800-meter run (2:22.29) and fifth in the long jump (5.08 meters).

Calder was also on the 4x400-meter relay team that finished 10th with a time of 3:53.92.

The 4x800-meter relay team – comprised of Janean Morris (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Kenya Jones, Jahlisa Smith and Leah Richmond (Long Beach, Calif.) – turned in the best finish of the weekend for the Lady Pirates, finishing second after running a 9:05.21.

Petrice Richards (Manchester, Jamaica) ran a 24.62 in the 200-meter dash to finish fifth, while Smith (Plainfield, N.J.) ran an 11:33.49 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to finish sixth. Jones finished seventh in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:37.73.

Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) also ran a 2:15.15 to finish ninth in the 800-meter run. Richards came in eighth in the 100-meter dash with an 11.83.

Aaron Anderson (Fort Washington, Md.) came in third in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.36 at the IC4A Championships in Boston, Mass., before running a season-best 21.44 in the 200-meter dash to finish fifth. Anderson's time in the 200-meter dash was good enough for provisional NCAA qualification.

Predist Walker (Suffolk, Va.) finished sixth in the long jump with a distance of 7.03 meters. He also finished second in the preliminary heats of the 55-meter hurdles race with a 7.41, but Walker did not advance to the final.

Xavier Fraction (Sewell, N.J.) ran a 2:29.07 in the preliminaries of the 1,000-meter run for a season best. Lawrence Campbell (Bronx, N.Y.) also ran a season-best 1:04.23 in the 500-meter dash to come in 17th.

The Pirates competed in the Alabama Relays last season, winning five event titles. Walker took the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.25, while Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) ran a 10.51 to win the 100-meter dash and Brandon Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) won the 200-meter dash in 21.37.

Hampton also won the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:27.22 and the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle in 1:01.31.
