GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Hampton University men's and women's track & field teams will compete in the Florida Relays on Friday and Saturday at the Percy Beard Track on the campus of the University of Florida.
The Pirates are coming off a strong performance this past weekend at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala., where they picked up a pair of runner-up finishes in the relay races; they finished second in the 1,600-meter sprint medley with a time of 3:30.40, before also finishing second in the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdles with a 1:03.81.
Junior
Predist Walker (Suffolk, Va.) ran a 14.47 in the 110-meter hurdles to finish third, while
Aaron Anderson (Fort Washington, Md.) finished third in the 200-meter dash with a 21.65. Anderson also came in third in the 100-meter dash after running a 10.63.
Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) ran a 10.65 to finish eighth.
David Kimani (Kenya) ran a 33:46.91 to finish fourth in the 10,000-meter run.
The Pirates also finished fourth in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 40.66, while the distance medley relay squad ran a 10:37.66 to finish sixth.
Lamar Veale (Chesapeake, Va.) compiled 5,756 points to finish 10th in the men's decathlon; he also tied for 10th in the high jump with a mark of 1.95 meters.
The Lady Pirates had four second-place finishes over the weekend.
Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) ran a school-record 4:37.51 in the 1,500-meter run to finish second, while
Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) and
DeShana Briggs (Norfolk, Va.) each jumped 1.60 meters in the high jump to finish in a tie for the runner-up spot.
The 4x100-meter relay team – with
Francena McCorory,
Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.),
Petrice Richards and
Rachel Burrell (Hampton, Va.) -- finished second with a time of 45.77, and the Lady Pirates finished second in the 4x400-meter relay after
Margaret Harris (South Bend, Ind.), Vassell, Calder and
McCorory (Hampton, Va.) ran a combined 3:39.97.
Harris also finished third in the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:01.96.
Jasmin Branch (Hampton, Va.) ran an 18:31.12 to finish third in the 5,000-meter run, and
Janean Morris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.24. Calder ran a 1:02.32 to finish fourth in the 400-meter hurdles.
Leah Richmond (Long Beach, Calif.) finished fourth in the 400-meter dash with a 55.30, and
Richards (Manchester, Jamaica) posted two fifth-place finishes – an 11.93 in the 100-meter dash and a 24.16 in the 200-meter dash.
Jahlisa Smith (Plainfield, N.J.) ran a 4:44.72 in the 1,500-meter run to finish fifth.
Select Lady Pirates will also head to Williamsburg, Va. on Friday and Saturday for the Colonial Relays, held at Zable Stadium on the campus of William & Mary. Vassell gave Hampton its best finish in last year's Colonial Relays, coming in second in the 100-meter hurdles after running a 13.73.
