SOFTBALL SWEPT BY LONGWOOD

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Longwood University on Wednesday, falling 12-0 in five innings in the first inning before losing the second game 12-3 in six innings at Lady Pirates Field.

Longwood struck first in the second inning of the first game, scoring five runs. Amy Betterton smacked a home run to put the Lancers up 2-0, before Briana Wells doubled home another run and Maggie Magadonna brought in two more runs.

Five more runs in the third inning propelled the Lancers to a 10-0 lead; Nichole Simmons hit a three-run home run, before Wells added a solo shot and Margadonna doubled home another run.

Longwood scored another run in the fourth inning on an error, before adding another run in the fifth when Patricia Nelson drove in a run on a fielder's choice.

Wells and Ashley Cornell split the five innings of work on the mound, each giving up one hit and combining for seven strikeouts. Wells' three innings of work were enough for her 26th win of the season.

Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.) and Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) each had a hit for the Lady Pirates (18-28).

Hampton took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the second game, when Kelsei Saunders (Suffolk, Va.) hit a three-run home run – her 10th round-tripper of the season. She drove in Ferguson, who led off the inning with a walk, and Tamara Vickers (Lawndale, Calif.), who singled.

The Lancers (31-13) answered with four runs in the top of the third inning to a take a 5-3 lead. After Brittany Matthews tripled, Kamberly Nuckols drove her in with a double down the left field line. Margadonna then singled home a run, and Ashley Kramer brought her in with a triple. Camille Ketsdever reached on an error to drive in the fourth run of the inning.

Longwood then added seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to break the game open, when Simmons scored on a wild pitch and Kramer tripled home a pair of runs. Ketsdever then singled home another run, before Betterton hit a two-run home run.

Wells picked up her 27th win of the season, going four innings and striking out three. Kramer and Nuchols each went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Lancers, and Kramer drove in a team-high three runs.
