Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2
HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team lost both of its games in Wednesday's doubleheader against East Carolina, dropping the first game 9-0 in five innings before losing the second game 12-0 at Lady Pirates Field.
East Carolina jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the first game, thanks to a single from Charina Sumner that brought in a pair. Singles from Nicole Jordan, Christina Merrida and Cristen Aona, along with a double from Marina Gusman-Brown, helped lead East Carolina to a six-run second inning to take an 8-0 lead.
Kaui Tom singled home a run in the third inning to push the first game to its final margin.
Jada Jeffries (Lithonia, Ga.),
Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) and MEAC Player of the Week
Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.) each had a hit in the first game for the Lady Pirates (15-24).
Toni Paisley struck out 12 batters in five innings of work to pick up her 16th win of the season.
East Carolina (22-12) led the second game 2-0 after three innings, thanks to a leadoff home run from Gusman-Brown in the first inning and an RBI single in the third inning from Sumner.
The Lady Pirates threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning after a leadoff single from Jeffries, who then advanced to third base on a pair of passed balls. The run never materialized, though, and East Carolina exploded for 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning to break the game open.
Merrida got things started by driving in a pair of runs on a fielder's choice, before Kai Clark singled home another run and Tom hit a two-run home run. Aona then added a solo homer, and Gusman-Brown hit her second round-tripper of the game, a three-run shot.
Jeffries had Hampton's lone hit in the second game.
Gusman-Brown went 3-for-3 from the plate in the second game to lead East Carolina, which has won 14 of its last 15 games, including five five-inning affairs.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they head to Baltimore, Md. to continue MEAC play against Morgan State at 1 p.m. For more information on Hampton University softball, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5811, or visit the official Pirates website at
