SOFTBALL CLOSES REGULAR SEASON WITH WIN

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University closed out the regular season with a win to celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, beating Coppin State 2-1 at Lady Pirates Field.

The win came after the Lady Eagles swept Saturday's doubleheader, winning the first game 4-2 before taking the second game 4-1.

The Lady Pirates (21-36, 9-6 MEAC) struck first in the bottom of the first inning on Sunday, when Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Coppin State answered with a run of its own in the top of the second inning, when Amber Miller scored on a fielding error.

Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) drove in Tamara Vickers (Lawndale, Calif.) with a bunt single in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Lady Pirates a 2-1 lead.

Sydni Benton (Chicago, Ill.) went the distance to pick up her sixth win of the season, giving up just one hit and striking out three. Vickers went 3-for-3 from the plate, scoring twice.

The first game of Saturday's doubleheader needed extra innings, with both teams going scoreless in the first seven innings. Coppin State scored first in the top of the eighth inning on a throwing error, before the Lady Pirates answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.).

Paige Arnold drove in a run with a fielder's choice in the top of the ninth to put the Lady Eagles back on top, before Nicole Boggs drove in two more with a single to give Coppin State a 4-1 lead.

Jada Jeffries (Lithonia, Ga.) singled home a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to push the game to its final margin.

Jeffries went all nine innings, holding Coppin State to just one hit in the first seven innings. She struck out four on the afternoon, while Arnold struck out eight in nine innings of work for the Lady Eagles.

Byrd went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lady Pirates.

Coppin State struck first in the fourth inning of Saturday's second game, when Charma Robinson drove in a run with a single, before Hampton tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a bunt single from Bre'Anna Brown (Los Angeles, Calif.).

Arnold hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to push the Lady Eagles ahead 3-1, and Dudley scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning to push the game to its final margin.

Byrd struck out eight hitters in seven innings of work for the Lady Pirates.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on May 13-15, when they compete in the 2010 MEAC Softball Championships in Ormond Beach, Fla.
