PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Hampton University women's cross country team opened the 2010 season Saturday morning by winning the Maryland Eastern Shore Lid-Lifter Invitational at the UMES Driving Range and Cross Country Course.
The Lady Pirates finished the meet with 22 points, 20 points fewer than second-place Norfolk State. The men's cross country team finished fourth with 93 points. The U.S. Naval Academy tallied 28 points to win the men's team title.
Senior
Jasmin Branch (Hampton, Va.) finished second overall after completing the 5K course in 19:44.32. Freshman
Nichelle Harris (Rahway, N.J.) ran a 20:11.49 to finish third, while sophomore
Teshika Rivers (Greenbelt, Md.) came in fourth after running a 20:24.00.
A 20:32.69 from freshman
Devyn Thompson (Chicago, Ill.) helped her finish sixth, while sophomore
Shaquanda Gainey (Camden, N.J.) came in seventh with a 20:51.28. Freshman
Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.) ran a 21:14.61 to finish ninth.
Senior
Adrienne Thomas (Silver Spring, Md.) ran a 23:14.14 to finish 16th.
Senior
David Kimani (Kenya) paced the Pirates, finishing the 8K course in 26:03.60 to finish 21st. Freshman
Je'Von Hutchinson (Boynton, Fla.) came in 29th with a 28:51.86, while freshman
Jaleel Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) ran a 29:13.86 to come in 32nd.
Sophomore
Xavier Fraction (Sewell, N.J.) matched Rogers' time to finish 33rd, and sophomore
Michael Davenport (Pleasantville, N.J.) ran a 30:01.34 to come in 34th.
Freshman
Brandon Burton (Newport News, Va.) finished 36th with a 31:56.98.
Norfolk State's Kellen Rutto won the women's individual crown with a 19:31.75, while Vincent Rono of Norfolk State took the men's individual title after running a 25:30.19.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action on Sept. 18, when they return to Princess Anne, Md. for the UMES Cappy Anderson Invitational.
