HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will come home in search of its second straight win on Saturday, when the Lady Pirates take on Delaware State at the HU Convocation Center at 4 p.m.
The Lady Pirates (13-6, 6-1 MEAC), in their second season under head coach
David Six, got back into the win column on Monday with a 59-47 win over Florida A&M at the Lawson Center. Freshman guard
Chikilra Goodman (Philadelphia, Pa.) led four Lady Pirates in double figures with 15 points, while junior guard
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) and senior forward
Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) each added 13 points; Perry also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Junior forward
Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 10 points.
Delaware State (5-13, 1-5 MEAC) dropped their fourth straight game on Monday, falling 64-50 to Coppin State in Memorial Hall. Freshman guard Deanna Harmon led the Lady Hornets with 11 points and seven assists, while freshman guard Kianna Conner added 10 points and junior center Alexis Johnson pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Hampton is 24-12 all-time against Delaware State, having won the last four meetings between the two teams. The Lady Pirates swept last year's meetings, winning 62-43 at Memorial Hall on Jan. 30, 2010 before beating the Lady Hornets 47-41 on Feb. 27, 2010 at the HU Convocation Center. Dating back to 2001, Hampton has won 16 of 20 meetings against Delaware State. The two teams first met on Nov. 16, 1979, with Delaware State winning 76-68. Hampton is 13-5 against the Lady Hornets at home.
The Lady Hornets went 6-24 last season, finishing 10th in the MEAC with a 4-12 mark. Delaware State returns two starters and six letterwinners from last year's squad, and the team was picked to finish 10th in the MEAC this season.
Conner leads Delaware State in scoring, pouring in 9.7 points per game, while freshman guard Tasia Bristow is averaging 8.4 points a contest and Harmon is pouring in 8.3 points a night. Senior forward Brittany Washington is the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 7.7 boards per contest.
The Lady Hornets are averaging just 53.5 points per game on offense, while giving up 62.9 points a night.
After beating North Carolina A&T 71-36 on Jan. 17, the Lady Pirates are 5-2 at the HU Convocation Center so far this season. The Lady Pirates were 10-3 at the HU Convocation Center last season, winning their last seven home contests. Hampton went 7-1 at home in MEAC games last season, and Six is 15-5 in his career as a head coach at home.
Following Saturday's contest, the Lady Pirates will take on Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday at the HU Convocation Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and the game will be televised live on ESPNU.
